Department of Mathematics

1.  Year of Established of the Department : 1968

2. A brief history of the Department :

The Department is organizing the M.Sc., Courses in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The Student strength in each course is 20. The course content includes special topics such as Graph Theory, Computer Programming, Numerical Techiques, Fluid Dynamics, etc., Appropriate teaching aids have been employed in the teaching-learning process. The examination process has been strengthened with frequent assignment programmes to test the student response.

The department organizes research work leading to M.Phil., and Ph.D., degrees in the areas like Functional analysis, Commutative Algebra, Mathematical Reliability, Fluid Dynamics, Numerical Techniques, Heat Transfer, Bio-fluid Mechanics, Geophysical fluid dynamics Pollution  studies and Applications of Differential Equations. About 30 Ph.D., and 75 M.Phil., degrees were awarded under the guidance of the teachers. The faculty members have published more than 100 research papers in standard Journals and presented about 50 research papers at National and International conferences. Also they have served as resource persons at National and International conferences. The department has also organised National seminars on applications of Mathematics.

The department has a library which is equipped with books required for curriculum and reference. The computer laboratory is equipped with systems and software, which are useful for programming by students and for research. The department has undertaken two major research projects.

Research and Development activities  :

The faculty members have published 6 text books on Mathematics and brought out 20 books as reading material under Distance Education Programmes

The department has significantly contributed to the  academic uplift and extension activities of  the University by starting courses like M. Sc., Statistics and P.G. Diploma in Computer Applications.  It shouldered the responsibility of teaching statistics for M.Sc., Bio-Sciences and M.Sc., Chemistry students as voluntary contributions. The department has been providing consultancy to other teachers on aspects such as computational/Numerical Techniques for Data Analysis and problem solving.

Collaboration Ventures  :

The department also has collaboration with ISRO for organizing a part of the research work on air space pollution. The department has entered into Memorandum of agreement with the Lukov  Heat  and Mass Transfer Institute, Minsk, Belarus, for mutual collaboration for joint research activities, exchange of academic materials, exchange of faculty members and Professional development programmes for the period of 2000-2005.

Consultancy Programmes   :

The department has been providing Consultancy to other teachers on aspects such as computational/Numerical Techniques for Data Analysis and problem solving.

The department has connections with Industry by undertaking two major research projects on "Enhanced Oil Recovery in Petroleum Industry" and "Air space Pollutants and Environment". The members of the later project visited industries at Kurnool and measured the level of Pollution due to industries.

Extension activities  :

The Department extended its full cooperation and support for organizing self financing M.Sc., course in Mathematics in some affiliated colleges at Anantapur, Nandyal and Kurnool.  The department has been actively extending academic support by delivering guest lectures for the self-funding courses, courses under Distance Education and workshops for Junior College teachers organized by the Government.
